SAM SHIELDS
SAM SHIELDS

A Johnny Cash record changed the direction of Sam Shields’ musical life. Now the Northumberland singer-songwriter is stripping things back again — one voice, one guitar, a harmonica and a collection of songs built to stand on their own.

Sam Shields was about fifteen when his grandad played him a record.

Not just any record.

Johnny Cash’s At Folsom Prison.

Until then, Sam’s musical world had largely revolved around indie guitar music. What came out of the speakers that day showed him there was something else out there.

“Up to that point I was only really interested in indie guitar music, but that opened my eyes to another world completely.”

It stuck.

Today, the Prudhoe singer-songwriter makes music rooted firmly in folk and Americana, usually armed with little more than an acoustic guitar, harmonica and songs that don’t need much decoration around them.

And on Sunday 25 October, Sam brings that sound to North Shields for a solo performance at the I Love North Shields Vintage Market.

The timing couldn’t be much better.

Five days later, he’ll release his new EP, The Night of the Fire.

WHEN JOHNNY CASH OPENS A DOOR

There’s something fitting about At Folsom Prison being the record that shifted Sam’s perspective.

Recorded in front of inmates at Folsom State Prison, Cash’s landmark live album is hardly about polish. Its power comes from presence: voice, songs, guitar, audience and very little distance between them.

That same instinct towards simplicity can be heard in the way Sam describes his own music now.

Folk. Americana. Acoustic guitar. Harmonica.

Nothing superfluous.

And when asked which track someone should hear before seeing him at the market, Sam doesn’t hesitate.

His newest one.

THE SOUND OF THE RAIN

Sam’s latest single, “The Sound of the Rain,” is the place to start.

His first reason for choosing it is refreshingly practical.

“Firstly, we can always do with some more streams.”

Fair enough.

But the second tells you considerably more about where his music is heading.

“The sort of lo-fi, bare-bones sound of the song is the most accurate representation of how I sound.”

It’s not an isolated experiment.

Sam and his collaborators have recorded an entire EP with that same philosophy.

The Night of the Fire arrives on 30 October, just five days after his North Shields appearance, and his Vintage Market set will offer an early glimpse of several of its songs.

There is something appealingly old-fashioned about that prospect.

Hear the songs first.

Record arrives later.

LEONARD COHEN, TOM WAITS AND JUSTIN TOWNES EARLE

Follow the trail of what Sam is listening to and his own musical instincts begin to make sense.

Recently, that trail has led particularly strongly towards the late American songwriter Justin Townes Earle.

Sam has just finished reading a book about Earle’s life.

“It was inspiring and heartbreaking in equal measure, so I’ve been listening to his music a lot.”

Then come two more names.

Leonard Cohen. Tom Waits.

Three artists with radically different voices, but something important in common: the song matters more than the shine around it.

Characters matter. Words matter. Imperfection can be interesting.

And Sam isn’t only looking across the Atlantic.

Closer to home, he points towards Mills and Farrell and The Quiet Fire, artists he’s found himself sharing bills with during the year.

“There’s so many. I’ve enjoyed being on the same bill as Mills and Farrell and The Quiet Fire on a few occasions this year — they’re some of my favourites.”

That last name will already be familiar to followers of I Love North Shields.

The Quiet Fire have played our Vintage Market too.

And that’s exactly what we’re hoping begins to happen with PLAY THE MARKET.

Not simply a succession of performers, but connections between musicians, audiences, venues and a North East music community that’s already out there doing its thing.

BACK TO SOLO

For the Vintage Market, Sam is stripping things back again.

After playing with others, this will be his first solo performance for a little while.

“I’ll be playing a lot from the new EP The Night of the Fire, which is out a few days after. I’ll be playing solo too for the first time in a little bit.”

There’s nowhere to hide in that format.

No wall of sound.

No band to fill the gaps.

Just the songs.

For music rooted in folk and Americana, perhaps that’s exactly where they should be heard.

And once the set is finished?

Sam has another priority.

“I’m looking forward to having a little look around the market, of course!”

Quite right too.

PLAY THE MARKET

This October we’re bringing a full day of live music into the I Love North Shields Vintage Market, with artists playing 30-minute sets throughout the day.

It’s something we’re developing in collaboration with LLIVELY Music, and an increasingly important part of what we want these Sundays to become.

You might come looking for a vintage jacket and hear your next favourite local songwriter.

You might arrive to see a musician and leave carrying a record, an old camera or something wonderfully strange you hadn’t planned on buying.

That’s the point.

Vintage. Music. Food. People. Discovery.

Sam Shields arrives at The Loading Bay at an interesting moment: with a new record waiting in the wings and a collection of songs about to leave the studio and find their audience.

And somewhere in those songs you can trace a line backwards.

Back through Justin Townes Earle, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits.

Back through folk and Americana.

Back to a fifteen-year-old lad from Northumberland hearing Johnny Cash sing inside Folsom Prison because his grandad thought he should listen.

Sometimes one record is enough to open the door.
