Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your day-to-day life?
I work from my home office in North Shields. I am a graphic designer and art director, working mainly on printed projects (magazines, catalogues etc). Day to day I spend most of my time on Adobe InDesign! Putting together publications, coming up with flatplans and speaking with clients – usually on Zoom as a lot of my clients are based down South.
What inspired you to become a content creator/writer for I Love North Shields?
I really wanted to get involved in something more close to home and connect with my community. I met Simmie at a networking event and loved her idea for a free local newspaper. I knew I had to be involved in some way!
Can you tell us about your favourite place in North Shields and why it holds special meaning for you?
I really love the Fish Quay. I grew up in a small fishing town so it feels homely to me. Being by the water, walking my dog, it’s so peaceful and calming.
What type of content do you enjoy creating the most, and what message do you hope to share with our readers?
As a graphic designer, visuals are key. There’s so much that you can communicate with the elements on a page – the colours you use, the way the images are layed out, the placement of a poignant quote. I hope readers feel happy when they flick through the pages.
What does community pride mean to you, and how does your work contribute to it?
It means being proud of where you’re from/where you live. It means wanting to help those around you. I believe what we are all doing as a collective with ILNS is amazing for the community.
Can you share a memorable project or piece you’ve worked on for I Love North Shields?
I’ve been involved since before the first issue, so I worked on the concept for the cover and inside pages. I had a vision for how it could look in my head – great photography with bright backgrounds, a different colour every time. To see that visual in my head now in people’s hands, for almost a whole year of issues, is amazing!
