Getting Inked: Blind Tiger Style

They say you should try everything once, which is how I found myself at Blind Tiger Tattoo Studio one chilly Sunday morning, ready to “get inked.”

Blind Tiger is impossible to miss on Howard Street, with its striking gold and pink tigers adorning the front windows—a bold contrast to the surrounding grey buildings. The sign on the door reads: “Shop Rules: No minors, drunks, dickheads, cry babies. Proudly women-owned.” The “no cry babies” rule gave me pause, but as a 65-year-old, it felt like a case of now or never.

Originally based in central Newcastle’s Carliol Square, Blind Tiger relocated to North Shields in June. The studio is owned by Gabriela Lastra, an acclaimed tattoo artist and proud North Shields resident, who shares the space with five other talented tattooists.

After exploring their styles online, I chose Hana Wolhf to create my tattoo. My design idea was clear: a snake inspired by my son’s python, Goosebumps. Hana’s delicate shading and intricate animal designs won me over.

While Hana worked, we chatted about her background, and I was fascinated to learn she has a degree in fine art and balances tattooing with her role as a rehabilitation therapist on the stroke ward at the RVI. It’s an impressive mix of creativity and care. Hana also shared how much she enjoys being part of North Shields’ vibrant community, despite her now longer commute.

As for the tattooing itself? Surprisingly, it wasn’t as painful as I’d imagined, and Hana’s warm conversation made the experience fly by. The result? A stunningly detailed snake tattoo that’s everything I’d hoped for.

Looking back, I wonder why I waited so long to take the plunge. Now, I’m eagerly anticipating the reactions of my (probably very surprised) family when I unveil my new ink!
