Bring Back the ‘Fishscape’: Reviving North Shields’ Hidden Gem
North Shields is a town bursting with history, art, and community pride. One of its most loved but sadly hidden landmarks is the “Fishscape” artwork on Nater’s Bank. Created back in 1987 to celebrate the very first Fish Quay Festival, this public art masterpiece was a nod to our town’s rich maritime heritage and cultural buzz.
Fast forward to 2019, and the “Fishscape” got the TLC it deserved with a much-needed restoration. But here we are again, just a few years later, and it’s once more faded into the background. It’s disappointing to see this iconic piece left out of sight and out of mind.

Why the “Fishscape” Deserves the Spotlight
The “Fishscape” isn’t just a piece of art; it’s a part of North Shields’ story—our story. Sitting proudly on Nater’s Bank, it’s a constant reminder of our town’s deep connection to the sea. Think about it: with drones capturing stunning aerial views, Instagram full of local gems, and ferries gliding past daily, the “Fishscape” could easily become a celebrated landmark once again.
Restoring this artwork is about more than just brightening up a wall; it’s about community pride, keeping our heritage alive, and making sure future generations get to enjoy what makes North Shields special. These kinds of landmarks start conversations and attract visitors.

Let’s Make It Happen
It’s time to put the “Fishscape” back on the map. Whether it’s through fundraising, support from local businesses, or backing from heritage groups, we can make this happen together. Let’s give this hidden gem the attention it deserves and turn it into a point of pride for everyone in North Shields.
