Local artist J.D.Linkleter (known as Jimmy) was born in Tynemouth in 1910.

Son of William Dalton and Esther Linkleter he was one of 5 boys and two girls. Growing up around the family business, Jimmy was skilled at boat building and engineering. However, he decided to pursue a career in sign writing and commercial art. Working as an illustrator during the 1930’s Jimmy illustrated some of the match day programs for Newcastle United.
During WWII in the early 40’s Jimmy was stationed in Ceylon, and here worked at the Times of Ceylon Newspaper. Here he illustrated the much loved RAF magazine ‘‘Airflow’’ and “Air/Sea Jungle Rescue”. Jimmy was also a flight sergeant with various Air/Sea rescue missions in the far east.
After his war years were over Jimmy came home to his native Tynemouth and continued his career as an artist. In 1947 he illustrated the ‘Battle Of Britain’ brochure which he presented with his compliments to the committee. He then went on to do a lot of work designing displays and advertising for ‘Tyne Brand’ and other local companies. He also churned out a lot of local scenery artworks which were frequently given away to friends and people he knew.
