The Adventures of ‘Ollie and Joe’

Gillian Denton recently caused a stir among the youngsters at her workplace, Collingwood Primary School, when they discovered she had recently published two children’s books! ILNS caught up with her to find out more about ‘The Adventures of Ollie and Joe’.

Why did you become a writer of children’s books?

As a mother of young children and someone who works closely with children every day, writing for this age group felt like a natural choice. I understand their humour, the way they think and what captures their attention. Children’s books are so special, they’re an invitation into new worlds, sparking imaginations and encouraging curiosity. It’s a privilege to create stories that might leave an impression on a young reader.

What are your stories about?

The ‘Ollie and Joe’ series centres on two adventurous children who, along with their family and friends, dive into mysterious exploits in the vibrant town of Blue Harbour. Each book presents a new challenge or mystery, from discovering hidden treasures to solving unexpected problems. I’ve poured my heart into creating a world that feels alive, fun and accessible, a place where young readers can feel at home while letting their imaginations roam free.

Where do you find inspiration for your writing?

Inspiration often comes from my own children’s personalities. My twins have this wonderful blend of mischief and creativity that makes every day interesting and lively. Their antics, along with the energy of the children I work with, bring constant inspiration and help me keep the stories fresh and relatable.

Who does the wonderful illustrations in your books?

I work with a talented illustrator, Vasiljević Milica from Serbia, who brings the world of Ollie and Joe to life. Her illustrations capture the heart of each scene and character, adding a layer of depth and colour that I couldn’t achieve with words alone. Together, we work to make Blue Harbour feel like a place children would want to visit again and again.

What are your plans for the future?

Right now I’m focused on completing all ten books in the series, with the ultimate goal of getting them into schools. I hope they’ll not only entertain but also help children develop a love for reading and expand their vocabulary. Through ‘Ollie and Joe’s Adventures’ my aim is to create stories that will make children smile, laugh, and imagine. I’m so grateful to share these adventures with young readers and to watch them embark on each journey with the same excitement and curiosity that fills my own children’s lives.
