Local Hero: Heather McKean

By Rob Glen

She’s cladded in hi-vis and holds a giant lollipop, so she does stand out. Before school and after school, on Coach Lane you can see Heather McKean the crossing attendant. And if Heather is there, there’s sure to be smiling children around too, even some of the adults may crack a smile. It’s hard not smile to with Heather’s infectious joy and enthusiasm for her job.

Heather brings a ray of sunshine to that little zebra crossing. She welcomes everyone with a friendly smile and high 5’s for the children and even remembers everyone’s name. And when you consider how many people use that crossing, it’s a wonder Heather has room in her head for anything other than names. It has also been known for Heather to spoil the children at the end of the school year with a small gift for anyone who crosses. Heather definitely goes above and beyond for her crossers.

You seem to really enjoy your job but what’s your favourite thing about it?

Children are the best bit, I get a buzz out of helping them across the road. They make my day with their smiles, high 5s and waves shouting “HEATHER!” down the street. I am so proud of my job.

What would you say is the worst part?

The grumpy and impatient drivers. The weather can be a bit bad too.

How do you remember all the children’s names?

It’s facial recognition, some names are harder to remember than others. It keeps me on my toes and keeps me up beat.

We know that you enjoy your job, but what does the job give to you?

Satisfaction. I’ve never known a job like this. I absolutely love it.

What do we call you?

Well our official title is Crossing Attendant, but the children like Lollipop Lady and if it’s good enough for the Children, its good enough for me.

So, don’t be shy to give Heather a wave as you pass, she’s sure to bring some sunshine to your day, even if you’re one of the grumpy drivers.
