Gary Ormston may be from Walker, but his deep connection to North Shields has shaped much of his life and photography. As a child, Gary would visit the indoor market with his dad to buy old computer games and grab food at the Fish Quay, a routine that sparked his love for the area. His connection grew as he attended the Fish Quay Festival, especially when Galaxy Radio hosted it, and studied Art and Design at local print studios during his GCSE and AS levels. Now, photography brings him back to Shields, particularly for the serene sunrise and sunset views along the river.
Gary’s photography stands out for its blend of cityscapes and street scenes, guided by his pursuit of natural light. “I’m always chasing the sunlight,” he explains. Whether at sunrise or sunset, the light’s interaction with architecture and everyday moments brings a cinematic quality to his images. He often centres his shots on famous landmarks, providing familiar reference points while offering a fresh perspective.
Over time, Gary’s style has evolved from a broad focus on anything and everything to a more refined approach. Influenced by his love of cinema and street photographers like Adam Lang and Nostalgia Kid, Gary has developed a unique style that merges street photography with cinematic elements. This blend gives his work a cohesive and distinct look, making Newcastle appear like scenes from a movie.
Gary’s aim is to capture local landmarks in a way people don’t usually see—quiet, atmospheric moments at dawn or dusk. His photography highlights the unnoticed beauty and calmness of everyday urban environments. “I want people to see their city from a new perspective—something familiar yet unique,” he says, using light and shadow to create mood and drama.
The weather in the North East, with its limited sunlight, poses challenges for Gary’s work. But instead of letting it hinder him, he embraces it. Rain, mist, and fog offer the chance to create more dramatic, moody shots that bring out a different kind of atmosphere.
