The plan to restore a rather neglected part of our town to its former glory, got off to a great start with the first community litter pick in early August.
With a minute to go before the 1pm kick off, three lonely figures stood outside the metro station, big bags at the ready. Then, in the style of a flash mob, people suddenly started to appear from all directions, clutching litter pickers, rubber gloves, brushes and brooms! And so the clean up began – from the top to the bottom of Nile Street, picking up every last bit of rubbish, pulling out the weeds that create pesky litter traps, and prising literally hundreds of fag ends from out between the paving stones. Passers by commented on the transformation; some said thank you; one obligingly put his fag end straight into one of the bin bags! Litter picks are going to be a regular feature of the Nile Street Project – and hopefully there’ll be less rubbish to pick up every time.
So a big thank you to everyone who gave an hour of their time to show their love for North Shields!
