Pure wool, natural fibres, stoneware pottery and a lifelong love of making things by hand. Meet Debbie Worthington-Bryson, the creative mind behind Simpliscandi, one of the independent businesses joining Common Ground at the Beacon Centre in North Shields.
There’s something rather wonderful about watching a simple ball of wool become something beautiful.
For Debbie Worthington-Bryson, the woman behind Simpliscandi, working with natural materials isn’t a passing trend. It’s something she’s been doing for as long as she can remember.
Long before handmade interiors, traditional crafts and natural fibres became fashionable again, Debbie was making, collecting and selling things that caught her imagination.
Now, she’s bringing that lifelong passion to Common Ground, the new independent indoor market taking shape inside the former Wilko at the Beacon Centre in North Shields.
And her vision is refreshingly simple: beautiful natural materials, traditional craftsmanship and a welcoming space where people can discover the pleasure of making things by hand.

THE BEAUTY OF KEEPING THINGS SIMPLE
The name Simpliscandi tells you something about Debbie’s approach.
Think natural textures, warm wool, tactile materials and the understated beauty often associated with Scandinavian interiors.
There will be wool, natural fibres and stoneware pottery, bringing together materials chosen for their character and simplicity.
But it’s wool that really captures Debbie’s imagination.
From sheepskin to pure wool, her work is rooted in a genuine appreciation of natural materials and what can be created with them.
“Making, collecting and selling has been with me since way back before it was fashionable,” she explains.
It’s a philosophy that feels particularly relevant in a world increasingly dominated by mass-produced products and fleeting trends.
For Debbie, there’s lasting value in something made carefully, using materials that are beautiful in their own right.

FROM A BALL OF WOOL TO SOMETHING EXTRAORDINARY
Weaving is at the heart of Simpliscandi.
It’s a traditional craft that requires patience, skill and an understanding of how individual fibres can be brought together to create something entirely new.
And it’s something Debbie would love more people to discover.
“I would like others to see how a simple ball of wool can be woven into something really rather unique.”
There’s something fascinating about that transformation.
The process may begin with the most ordinary of materials, but through the maker’s hands, it becomes something individual.
Debbie’s commitment to using pure wool is central to her work.
“What inspires me is my love of natural fibres. All my work is done using only pure wool. The materials I use make my work special.”
In an age of fast production, it’s a lovely reminder that making something by hand has a value beyond the finished object.
It’s about the materials, the process and the skills involved.

A SPACE TO MAKE, SHARE AND CONNECT
For Debbie, joining Common Ground isn’t simply about finding somewhere to sell her products.
She’s looking forward to having a space where she can continue creating, meet people and share her enthusiasm for weaving.
“Having space to work and chat is my perfect day.”
And there’s another ambition behind Simpliscandi.
Debbie would love to help others discover weaving for themselves, passing on the knowledge and practical skills she’s developed over the years.
“I would just like to carry on what I’m doing, making my products, being happy in my weaving and passing on any skills to anyone who would like to learn.”
That willingness to share is particularly lovely.
Traditional crafts have survived for generations because people have taken the time to show others how things are made.
Watching a craftsperson at work, asking questions and discovering how materials are transformed can be just as interesting as the finished pieces themselves.
It’s this human connection that makes independent businesses so valuable.
SOMETHING DIFFERENT FOR NORTH SHIELDS
As Common Ground begins to take shape, one of its most interesting qualities is the diversity of people and businesses coming together.
Alongside vintage retailers, artists, independent makers and specialist shops, Simpliscandi will bring a quieter, more tactile world of wool, weaving and natural materials.
It’s the kind of business that invites you to slow down, look more closely and appreciate the work behind what you’re buying.
For Debbie, the excitement is simply being able to carry on doing what she loves, surrounded by other independent businesses and customers who appreciate handmade work.
And perhaps that’s one of the most appealing things about Common Ground.
Not every business needs to be loud or elaborate. Some of the most interesting spaces are those built around a person’s knowledge, skills and genuine enthusiasm.
A place where someone can continue practising a craft, build a business and perhaps inspire somebody else to try something new.
WELCOME TO COMMON GROUND, SIMPLISCANDI!
We’re delighted to welcome Debbie Worthington-Bryson and Simpliscandi to the growing Common Ground community.
With her natural wool creations, love of weaving and appreciation for beautiful, uncomplicated materials, she’s bringing another wonderful independent business to North Shields town centre.
And we rather like the thought of visiting a shop where you might find beautiful stoneware, discover something handmade and stop for a conversation about how a simple ball of wool becomes something special.
Welcome to Common Ground, Debbie!
