Ant Thompson captured by David Hall @nostalgia_kid

A Stone’s Throw Festival is more than just a date on the music calendar; for many, it's the undisputed highlight of the North East's cultural year. The quality of the event and the sheer joy it delivers are so reliable that I, like many others, make a point of securing an 'early bird' ticket the instant they drop - often months ahead of the official line-up announcement. This pre-emptive commitment speaks volumes about the festival's inherent quality and the profound trust the audience places in its visionary founder.

A sold-out reunion by The Pirates at King Street Social became a powerful tribute to Janine Turnbull, raising vital funds for Motor Neurone Disease research. Led by her husband John, Team Janine has already raised £45,000 in her memory — and the night carried that mission forward. With emotional performances, community solidarity and a surprise appearance from Sam Fender, the event proved this was more than a gig — it was a declaration of lasting love and defiant hope.

North Shields’ next generation of music stars may already be stepping into the spotlight. At Salt Market Social’s intimate Loading Bay gig, Steve Willis’ youth showcases are proving that teenage talent is anything but amateur. From soulful soloist Sam Iduorobo to the swaggering, original sounds of headliners The Paradimes, four young acts delivered performances brimming with confidence, personality and serious promise. Not just “good for their age,” these are musicians finding their voice — and their audience. If history has taught us anything, it’s that today’s showcase could be tomorrow’s headline act.

As North Shields prepares its bid for Town of Culture, the conversation often turns to galleries, music venues and festivals. While these are vital, we must remember that a child’s first introduction to culture isn’t found in a museum - it’s found on their own doorstep. Children’s play is the purest form of cultural expression. When a child chalks on a pavement or invents a game with neighbours, they are building the creative foundations that lead to a lifelong love of the arts. Recently, I met with Professor Alison Stenning, a local resident, who has spent years championing this idea. Having run the Play Streets scheme across North Tyneside, she views these sessions as more than just physical activity.
