Meet mother-and-daughter vintage duo Judith and Rosie of Josie Starr Vintage, returning to the I Love North Shields Vintage Market at Salt Market Social this October.
There are traders whose stalls you can identify almost immediately — usually because you’ve stopped to look at something you absolutely weren’t planning to buy.
Josie Starr Vintage is one of those.
Run by mother and daughter Judith and Rosie, their stall is an eclectic mixture of vintage, preloved treasures, nostalgia, curiosities and the occasional object that leaves you wondering exactly what it is — but wanting it anyway.
After joining us at our previous Vintage Market, they’ll be back at Salt Market Social on Sunday 25 October as more than 50 vintage and antique traders take over two floors on North Shields Fish Quay.
And yes, they’ve confirmed something important already:

A love of old things that spans generations
Josie Starr Vintage officially began in 2021, but Judith and Rosie’s relationship with vintage goes back much further.
“We are mother and daughter, each with a lifelong love of older and preloved stuff,” they explain.
For Judith, it began with music.
Growing up with a love of the sounds and culture of the 1960s, she was already buying 60s clothing during the 1970s and 80s to match the music she loved.
Rosie’s relationship with clothes and objects was rather less tied to a particular decade.
Her eclectic teenage style meant inspiration — and potential treasures — could come from pretty much anywhere.
After spending time selling both separately and together, mother and daughter eventually decided to make it official.
In 2021, Josie Starr Vintage was born.
Throw away throwaway culture
There’s fun and nostalgia behind what Judith and Rosie do, but there’s also a very simple philosophy.
“We want to throw away throwaway culture!”
For them, buying vintage and preloved isn’t only about aesthetics.
“There’s more than enough stuff already in circulation and we want to help match each treasure with its perfect owner.”
It’s one of the things we love about vintage markets too.
Objects that could easily have been discarded instead get another life. Clothes are worn again. Toys become collectables. Records find another turntable. And sometimes something sitting on a trader’s table unlocks a memory somebody hasn’t thought about in decades.
So, what will you find on their stall?
We asked Judith and Rosie what people should expect at the October market.
Their answer?
“Literally anything 😂”
Which rather sums up Josie Starr Vintage.
There is, however, one guarantee.
Another Beanie Baby lucky dip.
Beyond that, you’ll simply have to come and rummage.
And the pair have very different weaknesses when they’re out hunting for stock.
For Judith, anything connected with 1960s and 70s pop culture is difficult to resist.
As she puts it, she’s still “the teenybopper with the transistor radio!”
Rosie’s weakness is toys.
Not necessarily pristine, perfect, still-in-the-box examples, either.
“The more lumpy and misshapen the better.” 🥰
We rather like that philosophy.
The stories are part of the treasure
Ask vintage traders what keeps them doing markets and the answer isn’t always the selling.
For Judith and Rosie, one of the best parts is what happens when somebody recognises something on their stall.
They’re looking forward to “meeting and chatting to customers and our fellow traders” when they return in October.
And particularly hearing the stories their stock brings out in people.
“We love to hear the memories that our stock evokes.”
That’s one of those little things that perhaps explains why vintage markets feel different from ordinary shopping.
A record isn’t necessarily just a record. A toy can take somebody straight back to childhood. A piece of clothing can remind them of their mum, their first night out or something they once owned themselves.
There are stories attached to old things.
Sometimes they just need the right person to find them again.
