The Songwriter Circle is a new stage for original voices at The Engine Room.
The Songwriter Circle, is a new initiative taking centre stage at The Engine Room, spearheaded by respected veteran musicians Steve McVay, Larry Page and Terry Gorman. This monthly event is quickly aiming to become a beacon for original music and a testament to North Shields’ commitment to nurturing its creative spirit.
The Songwriter Circle is an intimate gathering where artists perform their original compositions, sharing the stories and inspirations behind their work. It’s a format that fosters collaboration and a direct, authentic connection between artist and audience. As Steve McVay explains, the aim is to “bring on that younger generation, give them a platform… so they can get some recognition for it.”

The Engine Room, a grassroots music venue on Tanners Bank, provides the perfect setting. With a cosy capacity of 60, it offers an immersive atmosphere.
The venue’s mission to champion both local and national, experienced and emerging artists aligns perfectly with the Circle’s goals. Terry Gorman, co-founder, emphasises the importance of this space: “I think it’s become really important especially since lockdown as live audiences dwindled.”
The Songwriter Circle aims to change that, ensuring a focused and appreciative audience.
The Songwriter Circle offers a unique focus on original material, providing a crucial platform for creative expression beyond general open mic nights. “It’s not just folk music”, Steve clarifies, “there was one musician that played a rock song… we don’t limit the type of music.” All they insist on is that the music is played with live instruments and are original songs with no backing tracks. “It just loses that ‘live’ feel”, they all agree.
“And it’s different to a buskers’ night”, points out Larry. “Everyone comes prepared, no-one’s asking to borrow a capo.”
Larry, Steve, and Terry’s diverse repertoire showcases their appeal across various musical tastes. Their participation in the Songwriter Circle is not just another performance; it highlights the contribution of experienced veterans who bring extensive expertise, cross-genre appeal, and strong regional ties to this original music initiative.
The event is priced at an accessible £3.00 minimum donation which aims to cover costs of putting on the events – any profits will be re-invested into future events in the interests of Songwriter Circle performers.
It’s a place where artists can “showcase their unique work, receive invaluable feedback, and connect with fellow artists”, fostering collaboration. “We’re trying to let it evolve”, Steve adds, hoping for more collaborations and more non-male singer-songwriters in the future.
The atmosphere is intentionally supportive, allowing musicians of any skill to showcase their songs.
“At the first event, there was one lad who had previously been in a band who told me that was the first time he’d played to a live audience in eight years. If that’s what we’ve achieved, I’m happy with that”, says Terry. “You haven’t got to be a certain proficiency… if you can play a guitar and you’ve got a couple of original songs, you will get them played.”
This supportive environment allows budding talents to grow, like one individual who went from silently observing at a previous buskers’ nights to being a regular performer.
The next Songwriters Circle is set for 21 August, 2025 and then every third Thursday of the month, at The Engine Room.
It’s a fantastic opportunity to experience the raw talent of North Shields and be part of a thriving musical community. So head down to The Engine Room, discover new voices, and witness North Shields’ harmonious future unfolding.
