Local residents launch ‘Make North Shields Shine’ campaign with major community clean-up

There was a strong sense of purpose on Saturday 21st March, as the I Love North Shields team, alongside friends and local residents, came together at Silverlink to take part in a community litter pick as part of the Great British Spring Clean.

All wearing their I Love North Shields tote bags and t-shirts, the group showed that ILNS is more than just a name — it’s something people are willing to roll up their sleeves for.

20 bags collected in just a few hours

Focusing on a stretch of slip road from the Coast Road down to the Silverlink roundabout, the group collected around 20 bags of rubbish in a single session.

The scale of what was gathered highlighted a growing issue — everyday litter building up in highly visible areas.

But it also showed what can be achieved when people take action.

Launching ‘Make North Shields Shine’

The litter pick also marked the launch of a new community-led campaign: Make North Shields Shine, set up by ILNS writer Carol Davison.

The campaign aims to encourage people across the town to get involved — whether by joining organised clean-ups or simply doing their bit in their own streets.

Carol said:

“Sometimes if you want change, it’s best to start yourself. A bit of litter picking, a bit of pride in place — it all adds up.”

A wider movement across North Shields

The effort at Silverlink was part of a much bigger picture.

On the same day, along the North Shields Waggonways, local resident Josh Stewart and a group of 25 volunteers collected an incredible 45 bags of rubbish.

It’s a reminder that across North Shields, more people are stepping forward — quietly making a difference in their own way.

More than a clean-up

Litter is something most people notice — but often feel powerless to change.

Campaign organisers say the goal is not just to clear rubbish, but to shift mindset.

Cleaner streets can improve how people feel about where they live — encouraging pride, care, and a stronger sense of community.

Get involved

More litter picking events will be organised over the coming weeks, with residents encouraged to get involved.

Whether you join a group, bring a friend, or simply pick up a few pieces where you are — it all counts.

A community that cares

What stood out on Saturday wasn’t just the number of bags collected.

It was the people — showing up, working together, and proving that small actions can create real change.

Because I Love North Shields isn’t just something you say.

It’s something you do.
