By Dean Jolly

Long shadows cast by seagulls on the quay
Upon the walls of the old brick factory.
Inside, a blackbird’s eyes adjust to see
Through a broken window – she watches me
As I advance with camera in hand
Upon this empty and forgotten land.
The blackbird with her dark wings spanned
Glides from the window of the old Tyne Brand.
I take a snap and think about the past
For present still upon this patch of grass
I see a symbol of the working class
Still standing tall, defiant to the last.
