A 12km coastal heritage trail linking four historic buildings along the Northumberland and Tyne and Wear coastline gives cyclists and walkers a bracing new perspective on a much loved seaside stretch.
The Watch House Trail runs from Seaton Sluice, south through Whitley Bay, Cullercoats and Tynemouth to North Shields Low Light, tracing a stretch of coastline once patrolled by coastguards and revenue men watching for smugglers and shipwrecks. The route passes four remarkable heritage sites spanning four centuries of maritime history.
Highlights include the Grade II listed Seaton Sluice Watch House, built in 1880 for the local Volunteer Life-Saving Company; the iconic Cullercoats Watch House, connected to the celebrated artists’ colony that inspired American painter Winslow Homer; the Tynemouth Volunteer Life Brigade Watch House Museum, whose collection spans over 150 years of courageous coastal rescues; and the historic North Shields Old Low Light, a heritage centre and café on the bustling North Shields Fish Quay.
Rated easy/moderate in difficulty, the trail is accessible by bus and Metro, with refreshments available throughout its length. It can also be completed as a 24km out-and-back route.
A compelling combination of fresh sea air, dramatic coastal scenery, and living history; the Watch House Trail is a perfect feature for readers planning a North East adventure.
