Press Release | I Love North Shields Launches New Vintage Market Celebrating Community, Creativity and Reuse. A new community-led vintage market is set to take place in North Shields this April, bringing together local traders, creatives and residents for a day centred around sustainability, style and shared stories. I Love North Shields Vintage Market: Handpicked. Reimagined. will take place on Sunday 26 April 2026 at Salt Market Social, running from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Founded by the community platform I Love North Shields, the event has been carefully curated to showcase around 50 independent vintage traders and creatives, alongside live music, photography, and a full day of activity designed to bring people together. The market celebrates the growing movement towards reuse and conscious consumption, while also shining a light on North Shields’ evolving creative scene and independent businesses. Alongside vintage stalls, visitors can take part in interactive experiences throughout the day. Highlights include a Dress Up Corner, where people can try on vintage pieces from the 1930s to the 1960s, explore personal style, and capture their own photos — adding a playful and immersive element to the event.

There was a real sense of occasion on Stephenson Street as Laurel Cove — a new housing development in the heart of North Shields — officially opened its doors.

A fresh mural appeared on Nile Street—and it did exactly what good street art can do in a tired moment: it made people look up, smile, and feel something positive about the street again. The new work was spotted in progress and shared publicly as a “thank you” to Mul and Prefab77 for “lifting the mood” by adding color and care to one of North Shields’s most talked-about buildings. 

No Time for Waste, which will run from 3-18 April, aims to raise awareness about  the harmful effects of plastic pollution on sea life, the environment generally and the benefits of recycling.

Most people would probably agree that eating a hot meal specially cooked for you is one of life’s pleasures. One church in North Shields is offering home-cooked meals for free once a month. I visited North Shields Methodist Church in Hawkey’s Lane at the end of November to find out more about their new initiative, North Shields Eats (N-eats-S).

As North Shields prepares its bid for Town of Culture, the conversation often turns to galleries, music venues and festivals. While these are vital, we must remember that a child’s first introduction to culture isn’t found in a museum - it’s found on their own doorstep. Children’s play is the purest form of cultural expression. When a child chalks on a pavement or invents a game with neighbours, they are building the creative foundations that lead to a lifelong love of the arts. Recently, I met with Professor Alison Stenning, a local resident, who has spent years championing this idea. Having run the Play Streets scheme across North Tyneside, she views these sessions as more than just physical activity.
