Everyday culture: from port to plate

At the heart of North Shields, the Fish Quay is far more than a scenic waterfront. As the UK’s largest prawn port, it lands vast quantities of langoustines and fresh fish each year, supplying kitchens locally and nationwide. From boat to plate, seafood travels mere metres before reaching restaurants like Just Italy and Phil's Place. This is a town that feeds the nation — and serves its own catch with pride.

North Shields’ next generation of music stars may already be stepping into the spotlight. At Salt Market Social’s intimate Loading Bay gig, Steve Willis’ youth showcases are proving that teenage talent is anything but amateur. From soulful soloist Sam Iduorobo to the swaggering, original sounds of headliners The Paradimes, four young acts delivered performances brimming with confidence, personality and serious promise. Not just “good for their age,” these are musicians finding their voice — and their audience. If history has taught us anything, it’s that today’s showcase could be tomorrow’s headline act.

Mark Stutt delivers a match report on NUWFC v ITWFC - 1/2/26 Barclays Women’s Super League 2 , Gateshead International Stadium Player of the Match: Anna Tamminen

After two months away, Mark Stutt was back at Gateshead International Stadium to watch Newcastle United Women take on Ipswich Town — and it proved a frustrating return. A brilliant, looping strike from Beth Lumsden lit up a dominant first-half display, but the Lasses were pegged back and couldn’t turn control into victory. With promotion ambitions stalling, it took a late save from Anna Tamminen to rescue a point on a sobering afternoon.

The Next Gen Project: A Youth-Led Vision for North Shields

0

North Shields has always been shaped by its young people — their creativity, energy and ideas. Yet too often, young voices are missing from how the town is represented, remembered and imagined. Next Gen is a proposed new project from I Love North Shields in collaboration with Miriam Robson, designed to change that. Currently in development and subject to funding, Next Gen aims to create a youth-led edition of the I Love North Shields magazine, co-created with young people and rooted in their lived experience of the town today. This is not about telling young people what to say. It’s about creating the conditions for them to speak for themselves.
