**NS800 or SN800? That is the Question!** North Shields turns 800—and Terry McDermott of the North Shields Fishermen’s Heritage Project is determined to make the celebration one to remember. As plans gear up for a June 20th community festival featuring music, schoolchildren, and a grand boat parade, Terry also sheds light on why the town’s true festival name is SN800, not NS800. With heritage, heart, and a bit of historical correction, this event is set to honour the town’s proud fishing legacy in style.
North Shields began life around 1225 on the banks of the Tyne, sparked by the ambitions of the Prior of Tynemouth. Its early growth clashed with Newcastle’s trade monopoly, leading to centuries of fierce rivalry, riots, and recovery. From booming medieval trade and fishing fleets to decline, reform, and resurgence, the town’s story is one of resilience and reinvention. Today, 800 years on, the quay is thriving once again. Discover the full story in Mike's book, The Pow Burn NS800 edition.
As North Shields marks its 800th year, a full calendar of celebrations brings the town’s rich heritage and vibrant culture to life. Musician Liam Fender, a proud local and rising talent, reflects on his roots, the town’s evolving music scene, and the importance of community. With parades, exhibitions, and heartfelt performances, NS800 isn't just a birthday—it's a moment of reflection, pride, and hope for the future of this resilient coastal town.

In a kitchen overflowing with memorabilia, Carol Alevroyianni and Richard 'Brod' Broderick reflect on their unforgettable years shaping the iconic North Shields Fish Quay Festival. From humble beginnings in 1987—born from a fisherman’s idea for a party—to becoming one of Europe’s largest free festivals, their story is one of creativity, community, and cultural transformation. Through world-class music, street theatre, and a celebration of maritime heritage, the festival left a lasting legacy that still inspires today. As they now pour their energy into the Whitley Bay Carnival, their commitment to bringing people together through art and celebration continues to shine.
