As a long-time admirer of Prefab77’s distinctive style, I remember first encountering his work in the most unexpected places – guerrilla art on hoardings, lampposts, and boarded-up shops across North Shields. There was an undeniable energy, a raw, ripped, and torn aesthetic that immediately resonated with me, clearly influenced by youth culture, politics, and a punk rock spirit. It felt like a fresh, authentic voice emerging from the grassroots, a stark contrast to the more manufactured art I often saw.

Prefab77’s monumental mural, ‘The Siren,’ stands as a powerful testament to North Shields’ rich maritime history and a beacon for its future. Located prominently on the gable end of the former Olde Hundred Pub near the junction of Church Way and Albion Road, this striking artwork was strategically placed to capture public attention. Far from a mythical temptress, ‘The Siren’ is an allegorical tribute, explicitly defined by the artist as an homage to “the history of the town itself and the women who bravely supported the fishing industry.” This meaning deeply resonates with North Shields’ heritage, celebrating the matriarchal strength that underpinned its core industry which makes it more than just a mural; it’s a modern monument to resilience and the enduring spirit of North Shields.
More than just a beautiful artwork, ‘The Siren’ is intrinsically linked to the transformative Elevation Walls Project. Created in September, 2024, it kick-started the North Shields 800 Mural Trail, a community-led initiative marking the town’s 800th birthday in 2025. Inspired by this potential for transformation, the Elevation community arts charity was created and managed to secure funding from various sources, including North East Combined Authority, businesses, private donors and the proceeds from selling artworks generously donated by Prefab77.

The overwhelmingly positive reception to ‘The Siren’ proved the viability and impact of large-scale public art, laying the crucial groundwork and providing the momentum for the larger festival, which now features multiple artists and locations. This powerful piece of public art has not only enhanced civic pride but has also become a catalyst for urban revitalisation, weaving the town’s past into a vibrant narrative for its future.
Elevation is a community arts charity founded by local residents and powered by volunteers. To mark the town’s 800th anniversary, the Elevation wall mural festival has brought together eight talented artists to create a series of large-scale public artworks over the summer of 2025. Selected by a panel of community members, the artists were set the challenge of capturing the spirit of North Shields. Find out more about the Elevation North Shields 800 Mural Trail.
Elevation has been documented and promoted in collaboration with I Love North Shields (www.ilovenorthshields.com) and Sira Studio (www.sirastudio.com).
