Born and raised in North Shields, just a stone’s throw from the Fish Quay, Terry Overton – better known to wrestling fans as ‘Matty Mayhem’ – has carved out a name for himself as one of the North East’s most exciting and unpredictable professional wrestlers.

A former student of John Spence Community High School – just a year or two above Sam Fender – Terry’s roots run deep in the town. His postcode is still NE29 and he says that he proudly carries “that North Shields spirit” with him every time he steps into the ring.

Terry began wrestling training way back in 2007. For a while other interests got in the way, but the spark never really died and by 2015 he’d made his official in-ring debut. He hasn’t looked back since.

With numerous wins and a long list of championships to his name it’s difficult to pick out a career highlight but, if pushed, he says that the thing he’s most proud of is the time he spent performing with 5 Star Wrestling in 2018, in major arenas across the UK.

As ‘Matty Mayhem’, he’s well known on the wrestling circuit for his high-impact style, chaotic energy, and Newcastle United–inspired gimmicks. Depending on where he’s wrestling, he’s either the fans’ firm favourite or a notorious heel!

An awkward fall in the ring in December 2024 left Terry with a badly broken collarbone. Surgery was needed, followed by a long road to recovery. But in May he was back in the ring – in Blyth, for Rapid Action Wrestling, and a match in which he beat X-Jack, earning him the title of RAW Heavyweight Champion.

From the Fish Quay to championship matches across the UK, ‘Matty Mayhem’ is flying the flag for North Shields in every match – proving, as he says, that you can take the lad out of Shields – but you can’t take Shields out of the lad.
