A surprise flash mob on North Shields Fish Quay drew crowds this afternoon as more than 25 dancers performed a brand-new routine called “The Geordie Line Dance.”
And yes — it was absolutely chucking it down, but that didn’t stop anyone.
Led by Victoria Nicholls, founder of Line Dancing North East, the flash mob brought a burst of colour and energy to the Fish Quay, one of North Shields’ most iconic waterfront locations. The performance quickly became a talking point across social media, with locals sharing videos and calling it “peak Shields behaviour.”
Line Dancing North East Brings Joy from Salt Market Social to the Fish Quay
Victoria’s weekly line dancing classes at Salt Market Social have become one of the town’s fastest-growing community events, regularly attracting 70+ dancers of all ages. What began as a midweek hobby has grown into a full-on movement — literally.
Today’s flash mob was Victoria’s way of taking that energy outdoors.
“We just wanted to spread a bit of happiness,” said Carol Davison, one of the dancers who braved the weather. “The rain was horrendous, but honestly… once the music started, that was it. A bit of rain never stops a Shields lass.”

Dancing to Sam Fender on the Fish Quay
Instead of their usual country playlist, the group performed a routine to Sam Fender’s ‘People Watching’, a track rooted deeply in the North Shields community. Victoria originally choreographed the routine for beginners, but it quickly became a favourite with the whole class.
Visitors and locals paused their afternoon walks to watch the dancers hitch, stomp, and toe-strut their way across the drenched Fish Quay. Umbrellas went up, phones came out, and the grey Sunday suddenly felt a lot brighter.
Dog walkers stopped to cheer. Passers-by filmed the whole thing. One couple even danced along from the sidelines.
It was pure North Shields magic.
